Hurghada, Egypt, 2013

Hurghada is an important tourist center in Egypt, located on the Red Sea coast. It was founded in the early 20th century. Until some years ago Hurghada was a small fishing village but since the 1980s has been continually enlarged by Egyptian and foreign investors , thus becoming the leading seashore resort on the Red Sea.

The Red Sea is a rich and diverse ecosystem, more than 1200 species of fish have been recorded here and around 10 % are found nowhere else. This rich diversity is in part due to the 2000 km of coral reef along the coastline.

The story of the fish

Ahmed knew it as a child already that he wants to become a fisher like his father, so he didn’t consider going to school necessary. He called the boat Hamsa which is the name of one of his daughters.

The story of the fish

Ahmed and Amr, both fishers, are very happy that they are „freelancers“ and they own this boat. They make one-day-trips and at the end of the day deliver the catch to the sellers at the fish market.

The story of the fish

Depending on the season, Ahmed and Amr catch different species of fish. Now is the right time for some smaller kinds that are very tasty and expensive.

The story of the fish

Amr is preparing the bait. Trolling is a method of fishing where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures or bait fish, are drawn through the water. This may be behind a moving boat, or by slowly winding the line in when fishing from a static position. Trolling is used to catch pelagic fish.

The story of the fish

Trawling is different method of fishing where a net (trawl) is drawn through the water instead of lines. Trwaling is used mainly for commercial fishing.

The story of the fish

Youssef, Suleiman and Hamzah are preparing the net for the next catch. They are catching tuna. There are two kinds of trawling: bottom and midwater trawling. The first one is towing the net close to the sea floor and targets groundfish. Bottom trawling may cause destruction of the sea bottom – coral shattering, removal of seaweed and damaging habitats. Midwater trawling, on the other hand, does not represent such a danger because the catch usually consists of just one species and does not physically damage the sea bottom. It catches pelagic fish such as tuna or shrimps.
